“Lux Æterna” felt like a real statement when it dropped. In an era where a lot of Metallica’s turn-of-the-millennium to present-day material leans towards longer, more sprawling song structures, this track is a short, sharp punch to the gut — and a refreshing one at that. It wastes no time, comes out swinging, and taps straight into that classic Metallica urgency.
From a bass perspective, it’s an absolute blast. The tempo is relentless, the feel is urgent, and the bass is right in the engine room driving everything forward. I love the fact that Robert Trujillo even considered using a pick during recording to keep up with the speed, only to be encouraged by the producer to stick with fingerstyle instead. That choice really comes through in the tone and feel — it keeps the bass sounding organic, aggressive, and unmistakably Rob.
What I enjoy most about “Lux Æterna” is how it proves Metallica can still deliver something direct and no-nonsense without overthinking it. It’s fast, fun, and unapologetic — and as a bass player, it’s one of those tracks that reminds you why playing loud, driving rock music is so satisfying in the first place.
