Bass Diary Entry
Somewhere I Belong by Linkin Park is easily one of my favourite songs in their catalogue. I was 11 when Meteora came out, and Linkin Park quickly became one of the first bands I truly connected with. They’ve stayed firmly in my all-time top bands ever since, and this track has always stood out as one of their most powerful moments.
The song carries such a strong emotional weight, from the atmospheric intro through to the explosive chorus. At that age, music was starting to become something deeply personal rather than just something on the radio, and this song captured that feeling perfectly.
Getting hold of the Live in Texas performance not long after only strengthened that connection. Seeing these songs brought to life on stage, with the raw energy of the band and crowd, was completely mindblowing to (then) 12-year-old me. It made everything feel bigger and more intense, and this track in particular translated brilliantly to the live setting.
This was also one of my earlier bass transcriptions, and before publishing I gave it a proper polish and clean-up. At the time, it surprised me how poor many of the available tabs were for a band of this size and a song that had already been out for over a decade (at the time of original posting). It ended up becoming one of my more popular submissions on Ultimate Guitar, which was a nice validation after putting the extra work in.
From a bass perspective, it’s another great example of how Linkin Park balanced programmed elements with live instrumentation. The bass underpins the track without overcomplicating things, locking in with the groove and giving the song the weight it needs while letting the melodies and vocals take centre stage.
