Bass Diary Entry

This track holds a special place for me, as it was the second piece of sheet music I transcribed towards the end of 2020 when I first started moving properly into sheet music publishing. It felt like a natural choice at the time too, as Kryptonite has always been one of those songs that seems to live permanently on hard rock and early-2000s playlists.

It was a real pleasure to work through as a transcription as well. The song has such a strong identity, yet the bass part itself is all about supporting the groove and letting the song flow rather than trying to steal the spotlight. It’s a great example of how a solid, well-placed bassline can completely underpin a track without needing to be flashy.

The song has popped up in loads of places over the years too — appearing in the main setlist of Guitar Hero 5, as DLC in Rock Band, and more recently even showing up in Fortnite Festival, which just shows how well the track has endured across different generations of listeners and players.

Learning that singer Brad Arnold wrote the song while sitting in maths class at school at just 15 years old makes it even more impressive, especially given how iconic the track went on to become. With the sad news of his passing this past weekend, revisiting the song and giving the transcription another moment in the spotlight feels like a fitting way to celebrate a track that has meant a lot to so many people over the years.

From a bass player’s perspective, it’s also just a really satisfying song to play. The groove feels great under the fingers, and it’s one of those tracks that works equally well whether you’re jamming along at home or playing it with a full band.
