Bass Diary Entry
This was one of my early favourites when I first got into Megadeth through their compilation album Greatest Hits: Back to the Start. I absolutely rinsed that CD back in the day, and this track was always one that stood out straight away.
Compared to some of Megadeth’s more technical, all-out thrash material, Symphony of Destruction has a much more stripped-back, groove-driven feel — and that’s exactly what makes it so effective. It’s slower, heavier, and just feels massive every time that main riff kicks in.
From a bass player’s perspective, it’s a great example of how powerful simplicity can be. The bass line follows the guitar closely, locking into that iconic riff and giving it even more weight. It’s not about speed or complexity here — it’s about timing, tone and making every note hit with intent.
It’s also one of those songs that has become a staple in Megadeth’s catalogue over the years. Whether you’re listening to the studio version or hearing it live, it always lands. That riff is instantly recognisable, and it’s a track that feels just as strong now as it did when I first heard it on that greatest hits album.
Looking back, this was definitely one of the gateway tracks that helped pull me deeper into Megadeth’s music. It might not be the most technically demanding song in their catalogue, but it’s a perfect example of how to write a heavy, memorable riff that sticks with you.
