If you are looking for accurate bass tabs and sheet music for “Stay Together For The Kids” by Blink-182, you have found the right spot. A standout track from their 2001 album Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, this song is an absolute masterclass in dynamics. Unlike the relentlessly fast pop-punk anthems they are known for, this track relies on the stark contrast between a haunting, melodic verse and a crushing, heavy chorus—all played entirely in Standard Tuning. Below, you will find the officially licensed sheet music, my Session Notes on nailing Mark Hoppus’s tone, and a timestamped breakdown to help you lock in.

Before you dive into the sheet music, press play below and listen closely to the stark contrast between the gentle, atmospheric verses and the crushing, heavy choruses.
Song Structure:
Before getting into the song structure below, it is worth noting that the above is the music video which has an extended intro of about about 0:14 before the song actually starts, so I have based the timings on the studio version of the song (pasted below the song structure for reference as well).
- 0:00 – Intro: The song opens with the iconic, swirling guitar arpeggio. The bass sits this out, letting the atmosphere build.
- 0:13 – Verse 1: The bass sits the first verse out as well to build that suspense and tension before kicking in during the chorus.
- 0:39 – Chorus 1: Boom. The full band drops in heavily. Dig into those root notes and drive the heavy eighth notes with aggressive downstrokes.
- 1:06 – Interlude: The heavy distortion cuts out instantly, returning to the clean intro guitar figure. The bass drops out to let the dynamics reset.
- 1:19 – Verse 2: Enter the second verse with the restrained, melodic verse groove. Make sure you pull back your picking hand intensity immediately so the dynamic shift is noticeable.
- 1:46 – Chorus 2: Hit this chorus with the exact same heavy, driving power as the first.
- 2:12 – Instrumental Bridge: The groove changes entirely, focusing on hitting the notes at the right time and letting them ring out.
- 2:39 – Breakdown: The band launches into the heaviest, most driving section of the song. Treat this like an extended chorus, aggressively pounding those root notes to build maximum tension.
- 2:52 – Chorus 3: The final emotional peak. Give it everything you have in your picking hand and push the stamina to the end.
- 3:18 – Outro: Keep the rhythm here locked in until the very end where the songs starts to fade out.

Bass Diary Entry: Raw, Heavy, and Unforgettable
This is probably one of my favourite Blink songs full stop. It’s such a shift in tone compared to a lot of their earlier material — darker, heavier, and far more emotionally charged. Outside of tracks like Adam’s Song, this was one of the first times I really felt just how much depth the band could bring when they leaned into it.
There’s no gloss or humour here — it’s raw and direct, and that’s exactly what makes it hit so hard. The subject matter alone gives it weight, but it’s the way the song builds that really makes it stand out. It starts restrained, almost fragile, and then gradually opens up into something much bigger and more intense.
From a musical perspective, that dynamic shift is everything. The quieter sections give the song space to breathe, which makes the heavier moments land with even more impact. It’s a perfect example of how contrast can elevate a track from good to genuinely powerful.
On bass, it’s all about serving that dynamic. The verses are controlled and understated, while the choruses open up and carry more weight. It’s not flashy, but it doesn’t need to be — it’s about feel, restraint, and knowing when to step forward and when to hold back.
It’s one of those songs that sticks with you. Not just because it’s different from the usual Blink sound, but because it shows just how effective they could be when they stripped everything back and let the emotion take centre stage.
Session Notes: Tone & Technique
The Groove & Harmony
The entire emotional weight of this song rests on how well you handle the dynamic shifts. During the verses, the groove needs to be restrained, steady, and slightly laid back to leave room for the arpeggiated guitar. The harmony here relies on clean, smoothly sustained notes. But the second that chorus hits, you must instantly switch gears into a heavy, aggressive attack, heavily driving the notes; all in Standard Tuning (EADG). If you play the verse too loud or the chorus too soft, the song loses its impact.
Emulating the Pop-Punk Tone
This track requires a massive shift in tone and picking-hand technique between sections:
- The Verse Tone: Mark’s tone here is remarkably clean. If you have a chorus or subtle flanger pedal on your board, clicking it on for the verses will help you perfectly match that watery, atmospheric studio sound. Pick gently and let the notes ring out smoothly.
- The Chorus Attack: Turn the modulation pedals off and dig in hard with your pick. You want maximum fret clank and aggressive punch here to match the distorted guitars and crashing cymbals.
- Muting: Pay close attention to your fret-hand muting right before the heavy chorus drops. The silence before the explosion needs to be completely dead—no ringing strings.
