Bass Diary Entry
Wave of Mutilation was the very first Pixies song I ever heard, and — like a lot of people from my generation — I discovered it in the most unexpected place: Rock Band. I was 17 when the game came out, right in the middle of those formative years where every new band feels like a doorway into an entirely different musical universe. I didn’t know it at the time, but this one track was about to send me down a path that would shape a huge part of my musical identity.
Not long after, Monkey Gone to Heaven appeared in Rock Band 2, and that was it — I went out, bought Doolittle, and fell completely in love. Decades later, it’s still one of my favourite albums to put on from start to finish. If Rock Band hadn’t existed, I genuinely think I might not have discovered Pixies until much later in life. It’s funny how one song in a rhythm game can change your entire listening history.
From a bassist’s perspective, Wave of Mutilation hooked me instantly. The bassline is deceptively simple, but that’s exactly why it works so well — it’s the glue that holds the whole track together. There’s an energy to it that feels effortless yet essential, and even now I still find myself picking up my bass and playing it just for the pure enjoyment of it. It’s one of those lines you can fall into without thinking, but it never stops feeling satisfying.
Musically, the track’s compact, punchy arrangement is a masterclass in doing more with less. It’s tight, lean, and over before you know it — which only makes you want to hit repeat. That balance of surf-rock coolness and Pixies’ signature rawness is exactly why the song endures, and why it’s such a staple in my own personal bass history.
Looking back, Wave of Mutilation wasn’t just a song I learned — it was an introduction to a band that would stick with me for life. It was the spark that led me to Doolittle, one of the albums that shaped my taste, my playing, and my love of alternative music.
And every now and then, when I plug in my bass and hit that opening line, it still takes me right back to being 17, controller in hand, discovering just how powerful a simple bass part can be.
