Bass Diary Entry
Some songs don’t just get stuck in your head — they take over your hands, your ears, and your entire musical energy. I Think I’m Paranoid by Garbage was one of those songs for me. And, like a surprising number of tracks that shaped my music taste in my teenage years, I discovered it through Rock Band.
I was 17 when I first heard it during the summer of 2008. The moment that bassline kicked in — heavy, gritty, and absolutely locked into the groove — I was hooked. It has this incredible dark pulse sitting right underneath Shirley Manson’s vocals, anchoring the whole track and giving it a real sense of weight and attitude. It quickly became one of my favourite songs to play in the game, and every so often I still pick up my bass and enjoy sinking back into that line. It just feels good to play — empowering, tense, and undeniably cool.
Fast forward to now: I’ve recently relocated to Aberdeenshire, and I’ve been making a point of digging deeper into bands with Scottish roots. Rediscovering Garbage has been such a fun part of that journey — especially knowing Shirley Manson has ties to Edinburgh. It doesn’t necessarily change how I hear the music, but it gives it a special connection that makes pressing play feel just a little more meaningful.
Beyond this track, I’ve been spinning their Anthology greatest hits album a lot lately and really appreciating their overall vibe — that blend of alt-rock edge, electronic textures, and unapologetic confidence. But I Think I’m Paranoid remains a standout for me. It’s dark. It’s gritty. It grooves. And as a bassist, that’s everything I want in a song.
It’s funny how a rhythm game from over a decade ago continues to shape the music I love and the lines I love to play. Some tracks are more than nostalgia — they’re part of your musical DNA. And this one definitely is.
