As a massive System of a Down fan, I was instantly hyped when Scars on Broadway first appeared. I still remember staying up late in 2008 watching Metallica headline the KROQ Weenie Roast livestream — Scars on Broadway were playing one of their first shows, and that was the moment I got hooked. Even with only half the SOAD lineup, there was something exciting and raw about what Daron and John were creating together.
They Say is a great example of how simplicity can still feel powerful. It’s a relatively easy bassline — driving, repetitive, and full of purpose — but there are subtle nuances tucked into each section that keep it interesting. The song is played in Drop C♯ tuning, making it a solid introduction for players who have only ever lived in Standard. You get that heavier feel without the technical overload.
I remember picking this one up when I first started trying to lay down bass lines. I had just bought a little Squier Bronco 3/4 scale bass from a friend, and this track became one of my go-to jams. There’s a dark confidence to the groove and lyrics — straightforward, no overthinking, just holding down a gritty foundation that pushes the song forward.
Scars on Broadway may not hit the same unique chemistry you get when all four members of System of a Down unite, but if I had to choose between the side projects, I’ve always preferred Scars over Serj’s solo work. “They Say” was the first taste of what Daron had to say on his own terms — and for me, it absolutely delivered.
