Bass Diary Entry

I can’t remember exactly when I first heard “The Middle,” but I’m pretty sure it was on one of those Kerrang! compilation CDs I borrowed from my local library in the early 2000s. At the time, my tastes were leaning heavily into bands like Linkin Park, System of a Down, Nine Inch Nails, and Rammstein, so a more upbeat pop-punk anthem didn’t grab me straight away.

But hearing it years later, something clicked.

One of the core memories I now associate with this song was during a trip to Las Vegas with my wife. We were jumping in an Uber from the hotel to Fremont Street, the sun was out, and as we pulled away, “The Middle” started blasting through the speakers. The driver cranked it up and the whole car turned into this spontaneous, high-energy sing-along. It set the tone for a great night — pure adrenaline and good vibes.

And that’s the beauty of this track.

From a bass perspective, the driving pulse is what really propels the song forward. It’s a steady, energetic groove that keeps everything moving — simple, but incredibly effective. It’s one of those lines that feels great under the fingers, and I still pick up the bass and jam along to it every now and then just for fun.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to appreciate the message more too — that encouragement to stay true to yourself and keep pushing through even when things feel chaotic. It’s genuinely uplifting. And while I’ve only scratched the surface of Jimmy Eat World’s catalogue, tracks like this make me want to dive deeper.

Sometimes the songs you overlook when you’re younger become the ones that hit the hardest later in life. “The Middle” is absolutely one of those for me — a track that’s equal parts nostalgia, positivity, and pure good-time energy.
