Bass Diary Entry
When I first heard St. Anger, I was about 12 years old — right at that perfect age where everything feels louder and more intense. Frantic instantly grabbed me. The weight of the bass just drags the whole track forward like it’s trying to claw its way out of the speakers. There’s an urgency there that younger-me didn’t know how to explain… but I definitely felt it.
Back then, I was listening to a lot of Linkin Park and System of a Down — heavy in their own ways — but this was something else entirely. It was raw, chaotic, and completely in-your-face compared to anything I’d heard before. It actually changed my perception of music — that not everything has to be polished to be good. This album proved that something rough, messy, and imperfect can still absolutely kick ass.
I remember watching Metallica’s Rock am Ring 2006 show on YouTube a few years later and realising how much more the band had to give beyond what I’d heard before.
That performance blew my mind.
I still have a huge soft spot for St. Anger in all its raw glory. With other songs like “The Unnamed Feeling” on the album, it still hits just as hard now as it did then.
Playing this song on bass always brings me right back to that first discovery. It’s chaotic, unpolished, and incredibly fun… exactly how it should be.
