Bass Diary Entry
A are one of those bands I feel incredibly lucky to have discovered when I did. It was sometime around 2004 — after Hi-Fi Serious had already made waves — and I stumbled across the live version of “Here We Go Again (I Love Lake Tahoe)” from the London Astoria (RIP) on the bonus DVD that came with Hi-Fi Serious. The performance instantly hooked me. The energy, the hooks, the fun and self-aware attitude… it all just clicked. And that huge, infectious “na na na” chorus was impossible not to shout along with.
That discovery kicked off a hunt — tracking down A vs Monkey Kong and eventually collecting all their albums, singles, and B-sides like buried treasure. They may still be relatively unknown to the wider rock crowd, but their place in my musical journey is cemented. I’ve been lucky enough to see them a few times since their reunion in 2009 and even managed to snag a photo with singer Jason Perry after their show in Oxford!
As a bassline, it’s straightforward but super fun — exactly what the song needs. The groove drives the whole track, and there’s a playful funkiness that sneaks in toward the end, making it a joy to jam along to. Hopefully with new material on the horizon, more people will realise just how great this band truly is.
