“Girls Just Want To Have Fun” will forever be tied to one very specific memory for me. I was around 19, driving through the village I used to live in with a friend on our way into town. He casually mentioned there were some teenagers trying to look intimidating hanging around outside the corner shop on his way to pick me up. Naturally, the most sensible response wasn’t to avoid them — it was to turn Cyndi Lauper up loud, let the bass rumble through the subwoofer in the boot, and cruise past slowly, smiling and waving out the window.
It was ridiculous, harmless, and absolutely perfect.
Beyond the story, the song itself is a genuine classic. It’s one of those tracks that instantly lifts the mood — the kind of song that puts a smile on people’s faces whether they’re expecting it or not. It doesn’t matter if it’s blasting from a car, coming through a pub speaker, or playing on the radio — it just works.
While it’s not something I actively listen to on a regular basis and definitely sits outside my usual musical comfort zone, I’ve always had a huge appreciation for timeless songs like this. “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” proves that music doesn’t have to be serious, heavy, or complex to leave a lasting impression — sometimes it just needs groove, charm, and a sense of fun.
