Bass Diary Entry
“Miss Murder” was the first AFI song I ever heard, back in 2006, and it made an immediate impression. From the moment it kicks in, the bassline absolutely slams — driving the song forward with urgency and attitude. Even on first listen, it was impossible not to latch onto how much weight and momentum the bass brings to the track.
This song has followed me for a long time in a slightly unexpected way too. I originally started tabbing it out almost six years ago, and for one reason or another, it just sat unfinished. Seeing renewed discussion online recently about AFI — particularly around Davey Havok’s transformation over the years — felt like the right moment to finally come back and finish it off properly.
AFI are a band I’ve found myself listening to far more in recent years. As my own values have shifted — especially since going vegan in 2018 — I’ve naturally gravitated toward artists who share similar outlooks. Knowing that Davey Havok is vegan as well has added another layer of appreciation for the band, beyond just the music itself.
Musically, “Miss Murder” still hits hard. The bass doesn’t overcomplicate things, but it doesn’t need to — it’s relentless, powerful, and absolutely central to the song’s identity. It’s a reminder of how effective a strong, driving bassline can be, and why this track still holds up so well all these years later.
