Bass Diary Entry
“Medicate” is a song I strongly associate with the process of learning and transcribing, just as much as the music itself. I remember tabbing this one out during lunch breaks at work, sat in the corner we jokingly called the “coffee corner”, headphones on and Guitar Pro open, carefully piecing the bassline together by ear.
This track comes from Crash Love, an album I’d largely missed when it first came out. After Decemberunderground, my listening habits leaned much heavier for a good few years, and AFI quietly slipped out of rotation. It wasn’t until I started re-exploring some of my favourite older bands that I realised just how many great songs I’d overlooked — and “Medicate” was one of those moments of rediscovery.
Once I had the tab roughed out, I’d take it home and play through the whole thing properly on bass to make sure everything felt right. As is often the case, a couple of small tweaks were needed — subtle adjustments to phrasing and feel — before it was ready for re-release on sheet music platforms. Nothing drastic, just refining it so it sat naturally under the fingers.
Musically, the bassline is controlled and purposeful, sitting right in the pocket and supporting the song’s darker, moodier edge. It’s not about flash — it’s about consistency and feel. Looking back, “Medicate” is a great reminder that sometimes revisiting bands you think you’ve moved on from can uncover some real gems you didn’t even realise you’d missed.
