I very rarely watched music videos growing up, but “Ready To Fall” is one that really stuck with me. Even back then, the message landed hard. The imagery, the tone, and especially the closing words from vocalist Tim McIlrath — “Every action has a reaction. We’ve got one planet and one chance.” — made this song feel bigger than just another punk rock track.
At the time, I probably didn’t fully grasp the long-term weight of that message, but it clearly planted a seed. As I’ve grown older — and especially after going vegan — the themes in this song resonate even more strongly. The idea of responsibility, consequences, and the impact humans have on the planet and on animals is something that’s become increasingly important to me, and Rise Against have always been unapologetic about where they stand on those issues.
Musically, the bassline in “Ready To Fall” plays a huge role in shaping the song’s emotional drive. It’s steady, purposeful, and constantly pushing forward, giving the track a sense of urgency that perfectly matches the message. It’s not flashy, but it’s powerful — exactly what the song needs.
Coming back to Rise Against more recently has been a reminder of just how well they balance conviction with songwriting. “Ready To Fall” still hits just as hard today, both musically and lyrically, and it’s a song I’ve genuinely enjoyed rediscovering with fresh perspective.
