Bass Diary Entry

“I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” is one of those songs that instantly transports me back to being a teenager.

I first heard it when it came out, when I was around 13 years old, and it very quickly became an absolutely giant anthem. It was everywhere at the time, and for good reason — raw, emotional, and packed with the kind of energy that defined a whole era of alternative music.

A couple of years later, not long after The Black Parade was released, I saw My Chemical Romance live in Bournemouth. They played “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” fairly early in the set, and the reaction was unreal. The crowd energy was incredible — chaotic, loud, and completely locked in from the first note. Looking back, it was one of the first gigs I ever went to, and it set the bar extremely high for live shows from that point on.

From a bass perspective, this is a great example of how a driving, supportive bassline can elevate a song without stealing the spotlight. It pushes the momentum forward, reinforces the punch of the guitars, and helps carry that restless, emotional urgency that makes the track hit so hard. It’s not flashy — it’s effective, and that’s exactly what the song needs.

Revisiting this track now feels like reconnecting with a moment in time when music wasn’t just something you listened to — it was something you felt. Songs like this helped shape my taste, my playing, and my love for live music, making it a genuinely special entry in The Bass Diaries.
