Bass Diary Entry
“Enter Sandman” isn’t just a huge song — it’s a cornerstone for me personally.
Metallica are my favourite band, and while this is arguably their biggest and most recognisable track, it also holds a much deeper meaning in the context of The Bass Diaries. This was the very first song I ever covered, uploaded on January 2nd, 2013, marking the true beginning of the project.
That alone makes it special.
Musically, “Enter Sandman” is a masterclass in simplicity and impact. The bassline doesn’t try to do too much — instead, it reinforces the groove, adds weight, and gives the song its unmistakable sense of menace and momentum. It’s one of those parts that proves how effective bass playing can be when it’s fully locked in and serving the song.
Looking back now, it’s wild to think that this track was the starting point for everything that followed. At the time, I was simply focused on learning, playing, and sharing basslines I loved. I had no idea it would grow into years of transcriptions, posts, and a global audience of fellow bass players. But it all started here — with “Enter Sandman.”
Revisiting this song now feels like coming full circle. It’s familiar, powerful, and still just as satisfying to play as it was all those years ago — a reminder of why I picked up the bass in the first place and why The Bass Diaries exists at all.
