Bass Diary Entry

“Lights and Sounds” is one of those songs that takes me straight back to a very specific moment in my teenage years — long before I’d even properly listened to Yellowcard.

When this album was released, I was in the middle of looking at colleges to go to, and I vividly remember seeing a big poster for Lights and Sounds outside the café on the site of the college I eventually ended up attending. I remember thinking how cool it was that they were advertising music — and bands that were actually similar to what I already listened to at the time.

It wasn’t a factor in choosing the college in the end, but that image has always stuck with me. So whenever I hear this song or think about the album, it instantly brings me back to that period of life where everything felt like it was about planning for the future and figuring out what was coming next.

Musically, this track hits that perfect balance of energy and emotion that Yellowcard do so well. The bassline plays a big role in driving the song forward, sitting tightly with the drums and giving the choruses that extra lift that makes them feel so huge and anthemic.

It’s one of those parts that’s not about showing off — it’s about consistency, groove, and keeping the momentum pushing forward, which makes it really satisfying to play when you lock in properly with the track.

This one is tied as much to a moment in my life as it is to the music itself, and that’s probably why it still hits every time I come back to it.
