Bass Diary Entry

I was no stranger to Swedish music before I discovered In Flames — growing up I’d already been exposed to bands like ABBA (Fun Fact: my first ever gig was the Björn Again ABBA tribute band) early on and then The Hives as my own musical tastes started to develop — but “Take This Life” definitely turned the intensity up by several notches.

When I first heard this song, it hit hard and fast, and before I knew it I was completely obsessed with the album. At the time, In Flames were easily one of the heaviest bands I was listening to, and this track in particular felt like it had everything: speed, aggression, melody, and an unstoppable sense of momentum.

There’s something about the way melodic death metal blends huge riffs with almost anthemic hooks that really clicked with me here. It was heavy, but still musical — brutal without being chaotic — and that balance is probably why this album stayed on repeat for so long.

From a bass perspective, the part is all about locking in with the guitars and drums to drive the song forward. It’s fast, tight, and relentless, and while it mostly follows the rhythm guitar, the real challenge is keeping everything clean and consistent at speed. It’s a serious workout, but an incredibly satisfying one when you’re in the groove.

This song definitely marks a point where my listening started shifting toward heavier and faster music, and it’s still a track I love coming back to whenever I’m in the mood for something with a bit of bite.
