Bass Diary Entry

For a long time, the only Megadeth CD I owned was the 2005 compilation Greatest Hits: Back To The Start. I didn’t properly dive into their studio albums until later, but during college there were times that CD barely left my iPod. It was on constantly — walking to class, on the bus, in my room — and it became my main gateway into the band before I really understood just how deep their catalogue went.

Train of Consequences sits roughly halfway through that tracklist and it always jumped out at me. There’s a swagger to this song that feels different from a lot of Megadeth’s faster, more aggressive material. It still has that classic thrash energy, but there’s a strong groove running through it that makes it feel heavier in a more controlled, confident way rather than just pure speed.

That groove is exactly what makes the bassline so fun to play, but also deceptively tricky. On paper it doesn’t look particularly complicated, but it really lives or dies by how well you lock in with the drums and how cleanly you place each note. It’s all about control, muting, and timing, and if you rush even slightly it just doesn’t sit right.

Transcribing this one was a lot of fun because it really highlights how important feel is in metal bass playing, not just technical ability. It’s a great example of how a relatively simple line can still be incredibly effective when it’s played with the right pocket and attitude, and it’s one I always enjoy coming back to.
