Bass Diary Entry
This is one of the very first Taylor Swift songs I remember hearing, and I can pretty much thank Band Hero for that. Before that, she really wasn’t on my radar at all, but hearing the song in a game I was already playing meant it naturally stuck, and it ended up being one of those tracks that just followed me around for years afterward.
One thing that always surprises me is how often this bass part is transcribed incorrectly online. The original recording is played on a 5-string bass, which makes a big difference to how the line sits and how certain notes are approached. A lot of tabs force it onto a 4-string and miss some of the lower movement completely, which changes the feel more than people might realise.
Musically, the bassline itself is fairly simple, but it’s absolutely all about feel. There’s a lot of sliding into notes, moving smoothly up and down the neck rather than jumping between positions. It gives the line a really fluid, melodic quality that fits the song perfectly and helps carry that storytelling vibe through the verses and choruses.
Because of that, this is one of those parts where playing the right notes isn’t enough — you really have to focus on how you arrive at them. Getting those slides clean and in time is what makes the line sound authentic, and that’s exactly what I wanted to capture in this transcription.
