Bass Diary Entry
I remember 2013 really clearly, because that was the year I properly started embracing more “pop” music. Up until then, I’d never really been into bands like Fall Out Boy or Paramore, but around that time I started getting into stuff that was just… fun. I realised that music didn’t always have to be heavy or serious to be enjoyable, and that shift in mindset opened up loads of new artists for me.
I’ve got a really specific memory tied to this song as well. I was driving to meet some friends at the park for a kick-about, and 22 came on the radio. Normally, years earlier, I’d probably have reached straight for the station button, but this time I didn’t. In fact, I remember pulling into the car park while it was still playing, winding the windows down and greeting everyone with a bit of Taylor blasting out of the speakers. That moment always makes me smile when I think back to it.
What makes it even better is that 2013 also happened to be the year I actually turned 22, which felt weirdly fitting at the time. Not in an ironic way, more just one of those neat coincidences where a song ends up soundtracking a specific age and period of your life whether you plan it or not. Every time I hear it now, it instantly takes me back to that stage where everything felt a bit lighter and more carefree.
From a bass point of view, this track is all about feel and rhythm rather than complexity. The part sits right in the pocket, supporting the groove and keeping the energy moving without ever getting in the way of the vocals or the hook. It’s a great example of how pop basslines can be simple on paper but still absolutely crucial to how the song feels.
It might not be the most technical bassline in the world, but it’s a fun one to play, and it represents a point where my own listening habits were broadening in a big way — which is exactly the kind of thing The Bass Diaries has always been about for me.
