Bass Diary Entry

As far as memory serves, this was the first Alice In Chains song I ever properly heard — not counting the cover of Them Bones that appeared in Guitar Hero 2. This one though, really hit differently, and it’s always been tied to a very specific moment for me that I still think about whenever I hear the intro — that scene in Terminator Salvation.

The scene in that film gave me absolute goosebumps, and honestly, it still does every time I watch it. That calm moment while they’re fixing up the car, followed by the stereo suddenly kicking in when they get it working, and a teenage Kyle Reese (played by Anton Yelchin) hearing music (for what seems like the first time) in a post-apocalyptic world — it’s such a powerful bit of storytelling, and Rooster is an incredible song choice to underline that moment.

I know some people really didn’t like that scene or thought the song felt out of place, but for me it did the complete opposite. It opened a doorway straight into Alice In Chains, and after that I went deep into their catalogue and became completely obsessed with the band and that whole grunge-era sound.

From a bass point of view, Rooster is such a great example of serving the song. The line isn’t flashy, but it’s heavy, patient, and absolutely locked into the groove, giving the track that slow-burning tension that just keeps building as the song progresses. It’s one of those parts where restraint is everything, and when it finally opens up, it hits that much harder because of what came before.

That combination of atmosphere, emotion, and pure weight is what makes this song so memorable for me, and it’s exactly why it was one of the first songs I gave the full Bass Diaries transcription treatment when I started transcribing professionally.
