Bass Diary Entry

After finishing The Fate of Ophelia, I figured it only made sense to spend a bit more time with the rest of the album. When I saw that Opalite followed Ophelia as a single, it felt like the natural next choice to work on and keep exploring the feel of this era of her music.

Unlike Ophelia, which leans heavily on a synth-style bass part, Opalite features a more traditional electric bass line, and it sits really nicely in the mix supporting the groove without trying to steal the spotlight. It’s a great example of how a simple, well-placed bass part can glue the whole track together and give the song its forward momentum.

The line itself isn’t flashy, but it’s all about feel, timing, and staying locked in with the drums. There are plenty of moments where the bass just keeps chugging away underneath everything, and that consistency is exactly what the song needs. It’s the sort of part that rewards playing along with the track to really get a sense of the pocket rather than just learning the notes in isolation.

Working on this one was also a nice contrast after spending time on more obviously “synth-driven” bass parts in Ophelia. It reminded me how effective a straight-up electric bass can be in modern pop when it’s used tastefully, and how much of the impact comes from articulation and dynamics rather than complexity.

All in all, Opalite was a really fun follow-up transcription from this album and a good excuse to keep digging further into it.
