Bass Diary Entry

This is arguably one of the biggest hits of the entire 2010s, and one that I definitely grew to love over time rather than straight away. At a previous job, a colleague and I used to have the occasional guilty-pleasure Taylor Swift day whenever another colleague (who absolutely could not stand her music) was out of the office. Naturally, Blank Space featured heavily on those playlists, and after hearing it enough times, it completely won me over.

The original track uses a synth bass, which gives it that super tight, punchy low-end that drives the groove throughout the song. For this transcription, I’ve adapted that part for electric bass, keeping the notes and feel as close as possible to the original while making it comfortable and fun to play on a real instrument.

I’ve written this one in Drop D, which keeps everything nice and simple and lets you hit those low notes without having to jump all over the neck. That said, if you’re playing a 5-string, you could absolutely use the low B instead, which can make some of the transitions and slides feel a bit smoother depending on your playing style.

Bass-wise, this is very much about consistency and locking into the groove rather than flashy fills. It’s one of those lines that really shows how much impact a simple, repetitive part can have when it’s working perfectly with the drums and the rest of the arrangement.

Whether you’re a long-time Taylor Swift fan or just looking for something a bit different to add to your practise routine, this one is a great example of how modern pop bass lines can still be a lot of fun to play.
