Bass Diary Entry
This was actually the first Beck song I ever heard, thanks to Rock Band 2. Before that, I had no real exposure to his music at all. It’s loud, gritty, and full of attitude — not necessarily what people expect when they think of Beck, but an absolutely brilliant introduction to him as an artist.
I also have a really clear memory of this song from the very early days of me posting cover videos online, back when I was using a site called Coverium. Someone I followed on there uploaded a guitar cover of E-Pro, and I remember thinking how cool it was to see people putting their own spin on songs like this and sharing them purely for the love of playing music. It was a great little community at the time, and this song is always tied to that memory for me.
Musically, E-Pro is just relentless in the best possible way. The riff is dirty and aggressive, and the bass sits right in the middle of that wall of sound, helping to drive the song forward with real punch. It’s not about complexity here — it’s about energy, attack and locking in tightly with the drums to keep that momentum pushing from start to finish.
From a bass player’s point of view, it’s a really fun track to dig into because it rewards tight, confident playing. You need to commit to the groove and play it with attitude, otherwise it just won’t hit the same way. It’s one of those songs that feels great to crank up loud and properly lean into when you’re playing along.
Between discovering it through Rock Band and then later seeing it pop up in the online cover scene, E-Pro has always felt like one of those tracks that sits right at the intersection of gaming, internet music culture and just straight-up great rock songwriting — and it still holds up every time I come back to it.
