Bass Diary Entry
Somehow, after getting further into Beck’s back catalogue following my discovery of Lost Cause (which I’ve got a pretty great story about over on that post), I completely missed what is probably his biggest and most recognisable hit. It’s funny how that happens sometimes — you fall in love with the deeper cuts and only stumble across the massive single much later on.
It wasn’t until a colleague and I got chatting about 90’s music that Loser finally entered my world. He asked if I’d ever heard it before and I genuinely hadn’t, which completely baffled him. When he told me it was by Beck, I couldn’t believe I’d managed to miss it for so long, especially considering how much I’d already been enjoying his other material by that point.
After giving it a listen, it went straight into my music library. That laid-back, slacker groove, the instantly recognisable drum loop and that hypnotic bassline just lock together in such a cool, effortless way. It’s not flashy at all, but it’s absolutely essential to the feel of the track — one of those bass parts where if it isn’t sitting right, the whole song just wouldn’t work.
From a playing point of view, it’s a great example of how repetition can still be interesting when the feel is right. The line doesn’t really change much, but keeping it tight, relaxed and consistent is what makes it work. It’s the kind of bass part that teaches you a lot about groove, restraint and serving the song rather than trying to overplay.
Looking back, it’s pretty wild that one of Beck’s most iconic tracks came to me through a random conversation at work rather than radio, TV or films, but I kind of like that it happened that way. It made discovering the song feel more personal, and it quickly became one of those tracks I always enjoy coming back to and jamming along with when I want something chilled but still ridiculously cool.
