Bass Diary Entry
Sometimes referred to as “Untitled” due to it not being listed on some CD pressings of Dirt, Iron Gland is a short but jarring interlude sandwiched between God Smack and Hate to Feel. It’s one of those tracks I always forget is on the album, so whenever it suddenly kicks in during a full listen, it almost feels like being blindsided by it all over again.
It’s barely a song in the traditional sense — more of a chaotic, abrasive burst of noise that acts as a strange palate cleanser between two heavier tracks. It disrupts the flow in an intentional way, almost forcing you to reset before the album continues. Whether you love or hate it, it definitely leaves an impression.
The track is loosely based on the iconic intro riff to Black Sabbath’s Iron Man, making it a fun little homage hidden inside the record. It’s not subtle, but then again, subtlety was never really the point here. It feels like the band just having a moment of weird experimentation in the middle of an already dark and heavy album.
From a bass perspective, there isn’t much to unpack technically, but moments like this are part of what make albums like Dirt feel cohesive and alive. Even the strange little interludes help build the overall atmosphere, and Iron Gland is one of those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments that still manages to stick in your memory.
