Bass Diary Entry
My introduction to 3 Doors Down came through Kerrang! The Album 2, which I borrowed from my local library back in the early 2000s. This song sat roughly halfway through the first CD of the compilation, and after a run of high-energy tracks like Foo Fighters’ Breakout, Slipknot’s Wait and Bleed and Queens of the Stone Age’s Feel Good Hit of the Summer, Be Like That felt like the perfect palette cleanser.
Even though it dialled things back compared to the tracks around it, it still stuck with me straight away. There was something about the atmosphere and emotional pull of the song that stood out, and it’s one that’s stayed with me ever since. It showed a softer, more reflective side of rock music at a time when I was mostly gravitating towards heavier, louder songs.
With the recent news surrounding vocalist Brad Arnold, it felt like the right time to revisit the band and start transcribing more of the songs that meant something to me, beginning with the one that first introduced me to them. While Kryptonite was actually the first 3 Doors Down track I transcribed back in 2020, Be Like That will always hold a special place as the song that started it all for me with this band.
From a bass player’s perspective, the song isn’t about flashiness or complexity. Instead, it’s all about supporting the mood and letting the song breathe, locking in with the drums and giving the track a solid foundation without getting in the way. It’s one of those bass parts that proves sometimes the simplest approach is exactly what the song needs.
