Bass Diary Entry

Evanescence are one of those bands I always seem to come back to — no matter what I’m listening to at the time, they never really fall out of rotation for long.

I first remember hearing “Bring Me To Life” when Fallen came out, mainly because my sister was really into the band and this song was on constantly when we were kids growing up. Back then I just knew it as that big dramatic song that was everywhere, but over the years I grew to properly appreciate what the band were doing, both musically and atmospherically.

By the time The Open Door was released in 2006, I was a full-on fan, and going back to the debut with fresh ears made me realise just how strong those early songs were. “Bring Me To Life” in particular has that perfect early-2000s alternative metal mix of heaviness and melody that just works — huge chorus, massive dynamics, and an energy that still hits hard all these years later.

From a bass point of view, the part does exactly what the song needs. It reinforces the weight of the heavy sections, supports the piano-led verses, and helps glue together a track that shifts between quiet and explosive so effectively. It’s not flashy, but it’s powerful, and it’s incredibly satisfying to play when the chorus kicks in.

It’s one of those songs that instantly takes me back, but it also still stands up as a genuinely great track — not just nostalgia, but a proper, timeless anthem from that era.
