Bass Diary Entry
I’ve loved The Darkness ever since the first time I heard “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” back in school. It was impossible to ignore — huge vocals, ridiculous energy, and riffs that just begged to be played loud.
In fact, Permission to Land was the first tab book I ever bought when I was learning guitar. I even remember taking my guitar and amp to my grandparents’ house for a birthday celebration (my nan — RIP — and my sister shared the same birthday) and ending up playing along to this song in the living room to the whole family. Naturally, everyone tried — and completely failed — to hit those legendary high notes.
It’s one of those songs that’s just permanently tied to good memories for me. Even years later, I somehow found myself giving it a respectable go at karaoke in Alicante on a work trip in 2019… but that’s definitely a story for another time.
From a bass perspective, this track is an absolute blast. The line is busy, energetic, and full of movement, constantly driving the song forward while still locking tightly with the drums. It’s not just following the root notes — it adds real momentum and attitude to the arrangement, which is exactly what the song needs.
This was one of those transcriptions I always knew I’d eventually have to do. Between the nostalgia and how fun the part is to actually play, sitting down and finally transcribing it properly was a total joy.
