Listen To The Original Track

Before you dive into the sheet music, press play below and pay close attention to the driving, syncopated rhythm of the original synth bass so you can mimic that strict timing on your electric bass.

Song Structure:

Before getting into the song structure below, it is worth noting that the above is the music video which has an extended intro of about about 10 seconds before the song actually starts, so I have based the timings on the studio version of the song (pasted below the song structure for reference as well).

  • 0:00 – Intro: The track opens with a drum roll and minor piano chords. No bass present here, sit tight until the verse hits.
  • 0:11 – Verse 1: Keep the verse pattern completely locked in. Synthesizers don’t rush or drag, so maintain strict robotic timing.
  • 0:30 – Pre-Chorus 1: The arrangement starts building. Keep your attack steady and even.
  • 0:48 – Chorus 1: This is where the track bursts into full dance-pop energy. Dig in and make sure every note is punchy and compressed.
  • 1:27 – Verse 2: Right back to the tight, staccato verse groove. Don’t lose your focus on the strict timing.
  • 1:46 – Pre-Chorus 2: Rebuild the tension. Ensure your note lengths are identical to the recording.
  • 2:03 – Chorus 2: Hit the main progression with maximum pop energy.
  • 2:40 – Bridge: The dynamic drops slightly, no bass is played during this section.
  • 3:00 – Chorus 3: The final explosion of the hook. Keep your stamina up and stay glued to the kick drum.
  • 3:36 – Outro: That’s your lot folks, no further bass needed here!

Bass Diary Entry: Save My Heart From Who?!

This one started, as many great musical obsessions do, with a completely misheard lyric on the radio.

The line “Save my heart from the fate of Ophelia” kept landing in my brain as “save my heart from Darth Vader”, and once that happened… that was it. The song was stuck on repeat in my head whether I wanted it there or not. And when that happens, it usually means only one thing: it’s time to sit down and transcribe it.

What makes this track especially interesting is that the low end isn’t coming from a traditional electric bass at all — it’s a synth bassline, and it plays a much more staccato, rhythmic role in the groove. The notes are short, tight, and very deliberate, which means the feel of the line is just as important as the pitches themselves.

Translating that kind of part onto bass guitar is always a fun challenge. It’s less about sustain and more about clean articulation, muting, and locking in with the pulse of the track. When you get it right, the bass doesn’t just support the song — it actively drives the momentum underneath the vocal.

It’s also a good reminder that some of the best bass practise comes from modern pop production, where precision and restraint are everything. Simple on the surface, but incredibly satisfying once you really lock into the groove.

And yes… all of this because my brain decided to associate this song with Star Wars. Totally worth it.

Session Notes: Tone & Technique

The Groove & Harmony

“The Fate of Ophelia” has a deep, infectious new wave funk groove. The original bassline is heavily syncopated. Since you are translating a keyboard part to a fretboard, the biggest challenge is playing with strict, mechanical precision. Synthesizers don’t have fret buzz or human hesitation, so you need to lock your timing firmly to the grid and keep your note lengths incredibly consistent.

Emulating the Synth Tone

To make your electric bass sound like the massive pop synth used on the original recording, try these techniques:

  • Use an Octave or Synth Pedal: A bass synth pedal (like the Boss SY-1) or a thick octaver (like an OC-2) is the fastest way to get that artificial, fat electronic tone.
  • Play with a Pick and Palm Mute: If you don’t have pedals, grab a pick and lightly palm-mute the strings right at the bridge. This gives you a plucky, immediate attack with a fast decay that mimics a synthesizer’s envelope.
  • Compression is Key: Synths have perfectly even volume. Squash your signal with a heavy compressor so every single note hits with the exact same velocity.
