Bass Diary Entry
“Renegades of Funk” was part of my very first introduction to Rage Against The Machine.
The album Renegades was actually the first Rage record I ever listened to, after borrowing it from the library when I was a kid — without realising at the time that it was a covers album. I didn’t care though. What hit me straight away was the sheer energy the band brought to every track. Even without knowing the original versions, you could tell these songs had been completely recharged with Rage’s attitude and intensity.
Not long after that, I went back and explored the rest of their catalogue… and yeah, I was absolutely blown away. The original albums are obviously iconic, but Renegades will always have a special place for me because it was my gateway into the band in the first place.
From a bass point of view, this track is all about groove and swagger. The bassline is simple, heavy, and ridiculously effective, sitting right in that pocket with the drums and letting the rhythm do most of the talking. It’s one of those lines that doesn’t need complexity to be powerful — it just hits hard and keeps the momentum rolling from start to finish.
It’s also a great example of how Rage could take an existing song and completely make it their own. Same structure, totally different energy. And as a bass player, it’s an absolute joy to lock into and just ride that groove.
