Bass Diary Entry

While not your “typical” Jane’s Addiction track, this is actually (if memory serves me right) the very first Jane’s song I ever transcribed. At the time, there simply weren’t any decent tabs available for it, which made it the perfect excuse to sit down and work it out by ear. Looking back, it’s funny how often the lack of resources is what ends up pushing you to improve your own transcribing skills.

It’s a short little ditty, nestled right before the closer on Nothing’s Shocking, which is an all-time favourite album of mine. Even though it’s brief, it plays an important role in the flow of the record, almost acting like a quick burst of energy before the album wraps up. It might be easy to overlook if you’re only listening casually, but it always stood out to me as a fun, punchy moment on the album.

From a bass point of view, this one is all about attitude and drive rather than complexity. The line is straightforward, but it locks in tightly with the drums and pushes the song along with a real sense of urgency. It’s the kind of part that reminds you how effective a simple bass line can be when it’s played with the right feel and conviction.

Revisiting this transcription all these years later was a nice reminder of where a lot of this whole tabbing journey really started for me. It’s had a bit of a polish since those early days, but the goal is still the same — to capture the feel of the original and make it enjoyable for other bass players to learn and play along to.
