Bass Diary Entry

Believe it or not, this was only the second Beck song I ever heard (but the first one I truly remember connecting with) — and it wasn’t even performed by Beck himself when I heard it! My first exposure to it was through the PS3 game Beyond: Two Souls, during a deeply emotional section where the main character (played by Elliot Page) finds themselves homeless. There’s a moment where they’re sitting out in the cold and snow, playing this song on an acoustic guitar while trying to get a bit of spare change from passers-by, and the atmosphere of that scene paired with this song just hit incredibly hard.

The rawness of that moment was such perfect storytelling that the song became completely inseparable from the emotion of the scene for me. It didn’t feel like background music — it felt like part of the narrative. As is usually the case when I discover a song through a game and it really connects with me, I immediately had to find out who the original artist was and start digging through their back catalogue.

On the studio recording, the bass part is actually played on upright bass rather than electric, which really adds to the warm, organic feel of the track. From a playing point of view, it’s all about restraint, space and serving the song. The line isn’t flashy at all, but it supports the harmony beautifully and helps carry that laid-back, almost fragile mood that makes the song so powerful.

Coming back to transcribe this one properly felt like a nice way to close the loop on a song that originally grabbed me through such an unexpected medium. It’s one of those tracks that proves you don’t need speed or complexity to make a bass line memorable — just the right notes in the right places, played with the right feel.
