Bass Diary Entry
When I properly started diving into Alice in Chains’ back catalogue after their triumphant return with Black Gives Way To Blue, one of the first things I picked up was their Greatest Hits album. Ten tracks that really showcased why the band were such an incredible force throughout the 90s. Sure, you could easily argue more songs could have been included, but as a short, sharp introduction to get me started with the band properly, it absolutely did its job.
Angry Chair was one of the songs that immediately stood out on first listen. There’s a simplicity to it, but at the same time it carries this huge weight and atmosphere that just pulls you in. It doesn’t try to do too much, yet every element feels purposeful, creating something that’s both hypnotic and powerful. It quickly became one of my favourites and still hits just as hard every time I come back to it.
From a bass player’s perspective, one of the most interesting things about the song is how different the bass part is on the studio recording compared to how most players cover it — and even how the band themselves tend to perform it live. The album version has subtle differences in approach and feel that often get overlooked, which makes sitting down and properly dissecting it a really interesting exercise.
It’s another great example of how Alice in Chains could create massive impact without needing complex arrangements or flashy playing. Sometimes it really is just about the right notes, the right feel, and letting the song breathe — something this track does brilliantly and why it remains such a standout in their catalogue.
